Categories vs. transcendentals: the logical error of identity politics

The error is logical before it is moral. A category (chair, pencil, swimming pool) admits a finite series of imaginable attributes and therefore has an opposite — one is either in the pool or out of it. A transcendental (justice, goodness, sexual expression, beauty, growth, love) admits an open-ended series of completions that have yet to be revealed; it does not have an opposite, it has inversions and disjunctive completions.
The political move identity politics makes is to place undefined disjunctions into social categories. "Queer" doesn't complete the transcendental of sexual expression; it negates it. Logically, queer doesn't exist in the same way a unicorn doesn't exist — it's defined by what it isn't (straight) rather than by what it is. The proper disjunctive completion of straight is not queer but disordered — which creates a transcendental of ordered/disordered sexual expression in which the relevant criteria are consent and instrumentalization rather than the gender or number of participants. Under this reading, things like pornography and pure-instrumentalization dating become disordered; mutual fantasy fulfillment and group sex among respectful adults become ordered. The number and gender of participants are irrelevant; the state of the relation is everything.
The same applies to political transcendentals. Lawful/lawless is a proper disjunction; lawful/illegal is a closed binary that misses the point. Fairplay/cronyism is a proper disjunction; fair/unfair is a closed binary. Categories have opposites (one/not-one is meaningless because not-one doesn't exist; one/many is the proper disjunction). Transcendentals have inversions (queer is the meaningless not-one of sex; disordered is the proper inversion).
The political payoff: identity-political categories that exist only by negation (queer, BIPOC as defined-against-whiteness, "the oppressed" as defined-against-oppressors) cannot logically be defended because the category dissolves once its negation is removed. They require continuous oppression to exist as categories. The proper response is not to oppose them (which sustains their negative existence) but to invert them into a transcendental that has room for what they were reaching towards without requiring their negative pole. Love as the disjunction of order and chaos
A sharper theological extension of the categories-vs-transcendentals frame applies the same logical structure specifically to love (raw/inbox/2026-06-06t04-38-19-458z-lgbtqia-is-a-mythological-creature.md).
Love is itself a transcendental, and like every transcendental it admits inversions and disjunctive completions, not opposites. The opposite of order is disorder — and disorder doesn't inform any further understanding of love; it merely negates and destroys it. The proper disjunctive completion of order is chaos: not the absence of order but its complementary pole, through which love completes itself.

The folk expression "opposites attract" is reread under this frame as a misnaming of what is actually happening: dysfunctions complete a transcendental. A more ordered soul will seek out a more chaotic one because the union resolves the transcendent mystery of being; the fairy-tale Beauty and the Beast is the canonical worked example. Beauty loves the Beast because he is a creature of chaos that completes her ordered soul and reveals God's plan for her; the Beast can only love Beauty because he seeks to understand why God filled him with such chaos, and Beauty supplies the answer. Truth lives in the union of a disjunctive transcendental, and those unions reveal that truth to those brave enough to explore the unknown.
LGBTQIA, on this reading, is the structural error specified precisely. It is not a completion of love through its proper disjunction (order/chaos) but a disorder that seeks to undo the order of love by opposing it. It substitutes rules, idols, and obsessions for the fearless exploration of the chaotic within love. The political function is the construction of a safe space — an oasis of created order that protects travelers from the truth of the fullness of being by allowing them to discriminate against what they do not understand. Categories with defined boundaries are how the lonely defend themselves against the mystery of love; the LGBTQIA category exists to exclude that mystery from the lives of those too afraid to engage in the journey from loneliness.
The corrective is not to oppose LGBTQIA (which keeps the safe space in place by giving it a pole to define against) but to replace the ideology with a fearless exploration of the chaotic within love. This is the disjunctive-inversion move applied to the deepest of the transcendentals, and it cuts cleanly through the contemporary identity debate: the political mistake is not that LGBTQIA went too far in the direction of love but that it stopped short of love by substituting rules and identities for the order/chaos disjunction that is love's actual completion. Transcendentals compound; categories don't

The word transcendental comes from Julius Caesar's description of his troops crossing onto enemy ships — and was used by Cicero allegorically to mean crossing from one Aristotelian category onto another. Working with a transcendental is therefore an assault on an idea in order to understand it sufficiently and thus contain it and render it into a category, the way one seizes an enemy ship and adds it to the fleet. The key dynamic property: adding a ship to a fleet improves the fleet's attack capacity exponentially, per Lancaster's square law, which says the ability to concentrate fire effectively creates a squared advantage. The more we understand and define the components of a transcendental, the faster the process of rendering it into a category becomes.
Materialism is the result of successfully rendering a transcendental into definable empirical components. It is the deductive process that the scientific method uses to prove what gets induced from an observation or an intuition. The error identity politics makes is to measure inductions by their opposites without a coherent empirical system that defines the deductions — the fundamental logical error of opposing a transcendental in order to create a category. The wealth/oppression example:

The deductive system collapses because there is no empirical measurement of the opposition to the induction. Wealth is measurable; "economic oppression" is not — unless one invents a wealth scale and asserts without evidence that a low position on the scale equates with oppression. The absence of wealth results in hunger or uncertainty, but not in oppression. The "oppression category" is therefore a fantasy category, generated by opposing an induction rather than by deductively rendering the transcendental.
The constructive counterpart: genetics is named as a scientific tool that legitimately converts a transcendental into a category. We observe a woman kiss another woman and induce that she is a lesbian; we cannot deduce lesbianism from the kiss without circular argument, because there is no empirical evidence that universalizes as a measurable definition of lesbianism. But should a genetic marker be found that correlates with lesbianism, the kiss + marker combination becomes a legitimate deduction. The transcendental (sexual orientation) is converted into a category (the genetic marker) through empirical correlation rather than through circular categorical assertion or fantasy opposition.
The compounding dynamic also explains why growth is so difficult to summon and to tame: growth is itself a transcendental, not a category. Treating growth as a category (GDP, headcount, output) loses the compounding effect; treating it as a transcendental that gets understood through deductive articulation lets it compound exponentially in the Lancaster sense. The article holds this as the project's clearest formulation yet of why identity-political categories cannot generate flourishing: they are fantasy categories generated by opposing inductions, and fantasy categories cannot compound the way properly-articulated transcendentals do.
A post-categorical ontology

The unicorn doesn't exist as a horse; it exists as a fantasy that inverts cruel reality into something harmless. The Christmas tree ornament inverts the writhing body sacrificed on Geismar's Oak into a sparkling celebration of peace and love. The transman, on this reading, can exist similarly — as a harmless costume that inverts a broken reality, not as a category in opposition to truth. The fantasy is permissible precisely because it does not claim to be the category it inverts; the queer is impermissible because it claims categorical existence by negation.
The post-categorical ontology offered has five components:
- Vibe is truth — we see something as true when it has a vibe we like.
- Drip is flight — we use status and material things to hide or fake a vibe.
- Rizz is fight — we use charisma to break through drip to reveal the vibe (hierarchy) or destroy the vibe (equality).
- Love is a signal — the signal that reveals the truth of the vibe. We are only equal in our capacity to love and be loved.
- Anxiety is the inversion of love — the signal that tells us the clarity of the vibe. Anxiety arises under attack, is generated by attacking, and is countered by speaking and understanding the language of love.

Truth and grace vs. injustice and equality
A complementary theological diagnostic now organizes the corpus's critique of redistribution (raw/inbox/2026-06-01t08-25-30-561z-will-set-you-free.md).
Truth is sword that divides; grace is the unfair solution to truth's unfair distribution. Truth produces power-law inequalities in wealth, beauty, and flourishing; grace inverts those inequalities by exalting sacrifice. Today's politics, however, lives between injustice and equality, which feels like the right place to live because fairness seems virtuous — but in fact this space is easy to manipulate with fake symbols of justice and powerless acts of opposition.

Redistribution attempts to correct truth's unfairness by forcing equality measured in money and productivity. A developed structural argument organizes the project's critique of modern political theology (raw/inbox/2026-05-08t11-27-01-120z-there-is-no-church-without-the-law-of-moses-and-you-can-t-mo.md).
Step 1 — Nationalism as a new god. Nationalism attempts to destroy the binding regulatory authority of the church by replacing universalism of conciliar authority with supremacist authority of national will. Protestantism is the religious reaction to Catholicism that creates this move — a moral regulator that submits to the authority of the state. Positive law is the Protestant authority over the regulatory system that replaces the natural-law system of the universal church.
Step 2 — Multi-covenantalism as polytheism. Once nationalism is established as the new god, the next step is the plural covenant: multiple sacred frameworks coexisting because no single conciliar authority can adjudicate among them.
