The notes treat modernity as a continuous Renaissance–Enlightenment project whose material wealth produced two divergent offspring: a "Faustian" innovator culture that tames nature for ordered prosperity, and a "bourgeois" influencer culture that captures rents through brands, credentials, and regulatory arbitrage. Consumerism, luxury branding, and corporatism are framed as modern paganism — sacrifices to mascot-gods that hollow citizens into customers. AI and crypto are positioned as the legitimate "American cathedrals" alongside Apollo and Manhattan, but AI also threatens to become "Taqleed": frozen received knowledge that closes the gates of Ijtihad. The e/acc–degrowth quarrel is read as a Mu'tazilite / Ash'arite reprise. A recent metaphysical distinction now sits beneath the whole diagnosis: culture and community are built on technique, not technology — technique being the fruit of excellence and long practice, technology the producer of efficiency and a lowest-common-denominator standard of acceptable performance. Throughout, the diagnosis is metaphysical: materialism produces decadence, and only a recovered logos restores meaning.
Cathedrals old and new
The American cathedrals are coordinated technology projects (raw/keep/new-cathedral.md, raw/keep/whiteness-as-national-character.md):
- The Manhattan Project
- Apollo / the moon landing
- AI
- Crypto
"The American cathedrals are massively complicated technology projects like the moon landing and the Manhattan Project… What are the Cathedrals in progress today: AI, Crypto." —
raw/keep/new-cathedral.md
Built by the "Protestant Technology Monk / Priest" — a married, community-embedded scientific monk who pursues a coordinated civilizational project. (american-religion)
The contrast: the bureaucratic "current cathedral" — the regulatory-NGO-financial complex that crushes innovation and prosperity. The new cathedral and the current cathedral are direct rivals; their economic and cultural incentives point opposite directions.
Luxury, mammonism, consumerism: the American evil
The structural diagnosis (raw/keep/new-cathedral.md, raw/keep/seven-deadly-sins-of-americanism-and-their-opposite-virtues.md):
"Luxury brands combine the evil of idolatry and blasphemy into a uniquely American evil. American Luxury is idolatrous worship of comfortable leisure. American brands are blasphemous redefinitions of reality into false ideas of whatever that brand represents." —
raw/keep/new-cathedral.md
Luxury is Marxist fusion (high-culture-and-aesthetics): an oppressed object elevated by status purchase, so the buyer is elevated by the buying. The Marxist analytic move skinned in commerce.
The seven deadly sins of Americanism, with their opposing virtues:
| Sin | Form | Virtue |
|---|---|---|
| Blasphemy | Ideologies as truth | Reality |
| Idolatry | Brand-worship | Worship of God |
| Mammonism | Luxury without effort | Skill yielding experience |
| Materialism | Brand / credential as substance | Real knowledge |
| Degeneracy | Hyper-palatable consumption | Health |
| Pornography | Pop culture as emotion-trigger | Beauty that enlightens |
| Consumerism | Outsourcing competence | Experience over things |
Luxury negging: the elimination of the transcendent from exchange
A recent capture names the sales mechanism beneath the luxury/mammonism diagnosis: luxury negging (raw/inbox/2026-06-18t08-53-06-647z-luxury-negging.md). The technique is to make the buyer feel he does not belong and does not deserve the product, but that the seller is graciously permitting him to become something he knows in his heart he is not. For it to work, the seller must prevent any dress code or prior-knowledge requirement, because a buyer who can manifest real privilege, skill, or knowledge breaks the seller's ability to neg him. The structural parallel is the seduction move in which a man makes a woman feel inferior and under-prepared for the social interaction.
The economic core is the elimination of the transcendent components of exchange. In a genuine transaction the skill and experience of both buyer and seller are part of what is exchanged; luxury negging strips these out and replaces them with a solitary price signal, so the transaction can be judged only by how much something costs. Once the exchange is reduced to price, the incentive becomes to make the buyer feel he has purchased skill and social standing without doing the work required to acquire knowledge or manners. The grouchy doorman — usually from a race or culture conspicuously different from the local one — signals that the buyer is a likely thief and impostor; the unsophisticated, impatient salesperson meets any question with dismissiveness. Both reinforce the buyer's inferiority and force him to focus on price and brand as the only permitted differentiators. The Hermès or Gucci scarf should be expensive precisely so that the ability to buy it elevates the buyer from peasant to middle class. When the buyer can no longer tell any difference between products or services, prices can be raised at will.
The restaurant is the worked example. Instead of transforming fresh natural ingredients through technique and skill, the business transforms low-cost processed inputs through scalable packaging technology into the simulacrum of an expensive meal — expensive technology substituting for difficult-to-acquire skill. The buyer senses that technology has replaced skill, which alienates him from the experience of consuming and generates social anxiety, an anxiety sustained by his being deliberately prevented from understanding the production process. Were he to understand it, he would see that a McDonald's combo is made the same way as a Michelin-star meal — McDonald's simply has more money and better scientists, so its packaging and processing produce a better result at lower marginal cost. Point this out and the spell breaks and the anxiety dissolves, exactly as in The Emperor's New Clothes: anxiety fades on the encounter with reality that reveals truth.
The business's real product is therefore protected ignorance. It positions the brand in clear opposition to something unambiguously bad so that puncturing the brand forces the critic into an odious alignment. The lesbian chef anointed the youngest Michelin star is the device: to say she "just makes fast food that isn't very good" is to be forced to reject the broad social consensus that lets Michelin anoint brands with super-transcendental invented identities — "unicorns that fart glitter and poop rainbows" — designed to thwart revelation and truth. Luxury negging thus opposes beauty, grace, and truth with reactionary chaos, social anxiety, and idolatrous brands. It is the retail face of corporatism-as-paganism: the brand becomes the mascot-god, and protected ignorance is the ritual that keeps the god alive. (high-culture-and-aesthetics develops the inversion of the effort gate; heresies-and-ideology-as-religion develops the super-transcendental invented identity.)
Technique vs. technology: aletheia and techne
A recent capture supplies the metaphysical distinction the luxury-negging diagnosis had been assuming (raw/inbox/2026-06-25t06-15-11-187z-technology-and-technique.md). Culture and community are built on technique, not technology.
- Technique is the result of excellence. It comes from long-term practice that drives proficiency, and it is therefore slow, personal, and non-transferable except by apprenticeship.
- Technology creates efficiency. It drives a lowest-common-denominator standard of acceptable performance — the floor rises, the ceiling is irrelevant, and the practitioner's skill stops mattering.
At the metaphysical level the pair names a tension between universal truth and management tools. The Greek terms are aletheia — the underlying universal principle — and techne, the application of that principle. Today the same pair is renamed theoretical and applied, which the capture reads as a deliberate deflection: the modern vocabulary removes any requirement to orient thinking toward truth and instead licenses wide-ranging imaginary approaches to ideas. The capture calls the result unicorn thinking — personal truths that depend on imagined categories inserted into reality in order to substantiate a moral determination in an otherwise amoral truth. (heresies-and-ideology-as-religion develops unicorn thinking against the super-transcendental taxonomy.)
The second claim is about scale. Excellence is a deeply unscalable and inefficient process that focuses the vast majority of a society's attention on a narrow class of highly skilled, highly talented people. The hope that justifies the concentration is that those people create new tools and technologies that ultimately benefit the whole society. The Manhattan Project is the worked example: a small group of talented people created nuclear weapons that arguably prevented massive large-scale warfare from ever happening again while introducing the risk of planet-wide annihilation, and the same technology can produce massive amounts of clean, accessible energy that would profoundly alter the negative effects of burning carbon fuels.
The moral verdict the capture draws is precise and is the article's cleanest statement of technological ethics: the truth of nuclear energy is morally neutral; the application of that technology is the opposite.
This grounds three things the article had been asserting separately. It explains the cathedral ambivalence — the American cathedrals are the product of technique concentrated in a narrow class, which is why they are legitimately admirable, and the pathology begins only where technology's efficiency logic is deployed to replace technique rather than to distribute its fruits. It explains luxury negging exactly — expensive technology substituting for difficult-to-acquire skill is technique displaced by technology at the point of sale, with price and brand filling the space the skill vacated. And it sharpens the innovator / influencer split below: the innovator works in technique and produces technology as a byproduct; the influencer captures the technology and prices the technique out of the exchange.
Corporatism as modern paganism
The frame (raw/keep/corporatism-is-modern-paganism.md, raw/keep/vitruvius-is-disney.md):
"Pagan religions reject any notion of humans being made in the image of the divine but instead create divine representation of identities and ideas that pagans called gods and today we call brands… The trip to Disney World is a kind of pagan worship ritual where we sacrifice money and time to venerate the mouse god." —
raw/keep/corporatism-is-modern-paganism.md
Brands replace gods. Citizens become customers. Disneyland is the ritual site. The state itself becomes a "corporate roach motel" — easy to enter, designed to extract maximum customer-life-value before exit.
Vitruvius is Disney: a Roman brand manager imposing imperial standards. Both face the Tiffany problem — how to keep a brand from devolving into trinkets for the masses. Roman cultural decline is read as brand dilution of Vitruvian standards once leisure-luxury displaces talent-gated hierarchy. (high-culture-and-aesthetics)
Renaissance to Enlightenment: innovators vs. influencers
The structural read (raw/keep/the-transition-from-metaphysical-to-material-order-renaissance-enlightenment-and.md, raw/keep/the-transition-from-metaphysical-to-material-order-renaissance-enlightenment-and-2.md, raw/keep/materialism-as-driver-of-revolution-innovators-vs-influencers.md):
- The Enlightenment is the fulfillment of the Renaissance, not its successor.
- The "counter-Enlightenment" is the chain of revolutions (Peasants' War through the Bolsheviks) that aborted ordered liberty.
- Modernity produces an Innovator vs. Influencer split:
| Type | Stance | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Innovator | Tames nature, builds, takes risk | Newton (protected), Musk (harassed) |
| Influencer | Captures rent through credentials, brand, regulatory arbitrage | Galileo (proto), Ackman |
- Newton was protected; Musk is the contemporary innovator harassed by an influencer-class regime.
- Galileo is the prototype influencer — the "scientist" who became famous through dramatic conflict with the Church rather than through scientific breakthroughs.
The bourgeoisie that purchases status via state-backed credentials is the obstacle to ordered liberty.
The political consequence: a regime that taxes innovators to subsidize influencers. The corrective is to destroy the credential-rent economy (education-and-formation) without destroying the actual innovation engine.
e/acc vs. degrowth as Mu'tazilite / Ash'arite reprise
The historical pattern repeats (raw/keep/e-acc-vs-degrowth.md, islam):
- Mu'tazilite (12th-century Islamic) — pro-innovation, ijtihad, reason.
- Ash'arite (12th-century Islamic) — pro-stasis, taqleed, divine voluntarism.
- e/acc — effective accelerationism; Mu'tazilite descendant.
- Degrowth — climate-environmental decel; Ash'arite descendant.
The Ash'arites won in 12th-century Islam and the Gates of Ijtihad closed; the civilizational cost was the end of the Islamic golden age. The contemporary e/acc / degrowth quarrel will determine whether the West repeats the mistake.
AI as Taqleed
The contemporary stakes (raw/keep/tyranny-and-taqleed.md):
"Artificial intelligence is a kind of modern Taqleed where we create corpus of receive knowledge and then build systems around that knowledge. This process is the closing of the gates of Ijtihad of American Islam." —
raw/keep/tyranny-and-taqleed.md
AI freezes a corpus of received knowledge and enforces it as the operational ground truth. When fused with administrative power, it produces "tyranny and Taqleed" — orthodoxy at civilizational scale. The proposed counter: the Catholic Church should build a magisterium-grounded counter-AI — a logos machine running on transformer architecture, restrained by ecclesial tradition rather than by training-data orthodoxy. (catholicity, islam)
A complementary read (raw/keep/ai-dev-and-the-future-of-corporations.md): AI gives a single innovator-leader the leverage of hundreds of subordinates, recasting the corporation as investment-firm structure with three functional roles (innovator, agent, bureaucrat) compressed onto far fewer humans. The future of corporate form is therefore both more innovator-centric and more easily captured by surveillance.
Under the technique / technology distinction, AI is the purest case of the pathology and the purest case of the promise at once: it is a technology that raises the floor of acceptable performance across every domain simultaneously, which is exactly what makes it a lowest-common-denominator engine, and it is also the tool a narrow class of highly skilled people might use to distribute the fruits of technique more widely than any prior instrument. Taqleed is what happens when the floor becomes the ceiling.
Surveillance economics
The diagnosis (raw/keep/surveillance-not-productivity.md, money-debt-finance):
"There's been a profound deceleration of technological progress because it has all been in technologies that do not produce surplus value but only facilitate the extractions of rent by means of surveillance & accounting." —
raw/keep/surveillance-not-productivity.md
Western technological investment has shifted from surplus-value-producing industry to surveillance and accounting — credit-scoring, content moderation, ad-targeting, compliance management. China industrialized while the West built dashboards. General AI is read as the hypostatic object of the ultimate surveillance / accounting machine — the fully realized form of the technology the West actually invested in.
Memetics as satanic chaos
The cultural-semantic mechanism (raw/keep/memetics-are-satanic.md):
"Memes are the creation of Satan because they energize his minions. It centers the fight on flesh and blood or materialism. The democratization of memetics is the introduction of satanic, or chaotic, forces into the logos." —
raw/keep/memetics-are-satanic.md
Democratized definition-making, divorced from a truth-seeking institution, introduces infinite volatility into the logos. Merchants reorient institutions toward profit, replacing truth with brands. (heresies-and-ideology-as-religion)
Faustian heroism vs. transhumanism
The metaphysical contrast (raw/keep/trans-humanist-vs-faustian-heroism.md, raw/keep/conservatives.md, raw/keep/lessons-of-the-iliad.md, raw/keep/art-gallery.md):
- Faustian heroism — innovation tempered by civic virtue; the trader-spirit pursuing ordered prosperity through risk.
- Transhumanism — the trader spirit pursuing happiness via abstract exchange; price-as-meaning; matter as substrate to be re-engineered.
"The Iliad is Faustian man, the social contract is creationism." —
raw/keep/conservatives.md
Maimonides outside time vs. Spinoza in matter. The first preserves the metaphysical frame; the second collapses everything into materialism. Capitalism and Marxism share the same materialist metaphysics; both reduce the human to an economic vessel (Evola). (raw/keep/capitalism.md)
"Modern capitalism is just as subversive as Marxism. The materialistic view of life on which both systems are based is identical… [a] world the center of which is constituted of technology, science, production, productivity, and consumption." — Evola, in
raw/keep/capitalism.md
The four corners of modernism
A taxonomy (raw/keep/four-corners-of-modermism.md):
| Corner | Form |
|---|---|
| Secular right | Medici-style innovation; private patronage of high culture |
| Religious right | Christian Zionist / Latin Mass tradlarp |
| Secular left | Marxism-until-money-runs-out |
| Religious left | Mother-Theresa palliative care |
Most regimes claim one corner and quietly draw on the other three. The author's preferred constructive direction is secular-right + religious-right hybrid — Medici palazzo plus Latin Mass — without the tradlarp pose.
Plastic grace
A specific cultural-engineering critique (raw/keep/satan-is-plastic-grace.md):
- Plastic grace — manufactured nationalist identity (American Dream, Britishness as state product).
- Evolved ethno-local identity — emerged over centuries from place, language, ritual.
- Positive law as gardening, not manufacturing — law tends what is already there, doesn't create it ex nihilo.
Plastic grace is the modern administrative state's preferred medium: build identity through curriculum, media, naturalization ceremonies. It is fragile because it lacks the depth of evolved identity, and it requires constant administrative input to maintain.
Standing problems and gaps
- Pro-innovation vs. anti-corporate. AI / crypto celebrated as cathedrals; corporations argued to be incapable of innovation (
raw/keep/memetics-are-satanic.md,raw/keep/surveillance-not-productivity.md). Resolution: distinguish magisterial-cathedral AI from rent-extracting corporate AI. - Technique vs. technology, and the cathedrals. The cathedrals are technologies, and the article celebrates them. The reconciliation the capture supports is that technology is the fruit of concentrated technique and is legitimate as such; the pathology is technology deployed to replace technique (the Michelin kitchen, the credential, the model that fixes a floor). But the line is easier to state than to police, since every distributed technology eventually makes some technique unnecessary.
- Aletheia used two ways. Here aletheia is the universal principle standing above its application in techne; in american-religion aletheia is the German-romantic vibe-truth set against Anglo-Puritan textualist veritas. Both usages are in the corpus and they are not the same distinction.
- e/acc as American gospel vs. Mu'tazilite reprise. Specifically American or recurrent civilizational pattern? Both readings coexist.
- Faustian frame is invoked but not developed. Spengler is implied without citation. An article-level gap.
- Renaissance praised, Renaissance also blamed. The article holds: Renaissance produced both Medici hierarchies AND the bourgeois influencer pathology.
- Corporatism dual-coded. First condemned (
raw/keep/corporatism-is-modern-paganism.md), then "America as corporation under Trump" proposed. The author oscillates. - AI's epistemic effect. Both empowering single innovators (
raw/keep/ai-dev-and-the-future-of-corporations.md) and freezing knowledge / foreclosing ijtihad (raw/keep/tyranny-and-taqleed.md). The ambivalence is the point. - Luxury negging vs. brand-as-standard-setter. Vitruvius/Disney impose a real standard even while managing a brand; luxury negging weaponizes the absence of standard (strip skill, sell price). The article holds both as the two faces of the brand: the standard-setter faces the Tiffany problem of dilution; the negger is the dilution monetized. Where a given luxury brand sits on this axis is not always specified.
- Excellence as unscalable vs. broad flourishing. Concentrating "the vast majority of a society's attention on a narrow class of highly skilled, highly talented people" is defended here on the hope that the tools produced benefit everyone. That is a power-law argument with a grace-shaped justification, and it sits in tension with the middle-80% metric elsewhere in the corpus. (middle-class-flourishing)
- Gap on Spengler-by-name. Faustian / innovator language is implicit Spengler; no direct quote.
- Gap on transhumanism specifics.
